Youth Leadership and Patriotism in the American Legion Family

Empowering Junior Auxiliary, SAL Youth, and Future Leaders

Introduction

The American Legion Family’s youth program—including the American Legion Junior Auxiliary, and Sons of the American Legion (SAL) youth, we are dedicated to encouraging active involvement among members aged 17 and under. By fostering engagement at an early age, these programs work to develop enthusiastic, civic-minded young individuals who are inspired to remain involved in the American Legion Family as they grow into adulthood.

Origins and Structure

Many ALA units form Junior groups in response to the enrollment of numerous daughters of American Legion members. Likewise, the SAL youth program provides opportunities for sons and grandsons of Legionnaires to participate in meaningful activities. Each group is guided and supported by senior members, but activities are tailored to the interests, abilities, and understanding of younger participants.

Junior membership in both the Auxiliary and SAL serves as vital training grounds, nurturing future leadership and active participation within the American Legion Family. These youth programs offer unique opportunities for young members to develop personal growth, leadership skills, and a deep appreciation for American ideals.

Purpose and Values

The core mission of these youth activities is to instill the foundational values of their organizations. Junior Auxiliary and SAL youth are encouraged to embrace justice, freedom, loyalty, and democracy. Through participation in service projects, leadership development, and educational programs, young members not only learn about the organization’s mission but also cultivate civic responsibility and pride.

Organization and Leadership

Junior Auxiliary groups and SAL youth operate under the guidance of advisors and committees composed of experienced senior members. Organized within their respective units, Juniors and SAL youth conduct their own meetings, elect honorary officers, and plan activities relevant to their age group. Their initiatives are coordinated alongside their senior counterparts and, whenever possible, they are given roles in regular unit or squadron events to ensure they feel like true members of the Legion Family.

Conclusion

The Junior Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion youth programs are essential pillars in shaping the next generation of leaders within the American Legion Family. Through age-appropriate engagement, core value education, and meaningful involvement in unit and squadron activities, these programs ensure that all youth members are well-equipped to become dedicated, lifelong contributors to the American Legion’s enduring legacy.
